Seule place vénitienne à bénéficier du titre de « piazza », la place Saint-Marc (ou Piazza San Marco) est le centre politique, religieux et social de la ville. Située à une extrémité du Grand Canal, elle est entourée par certains des édifices historiques les plus emblématiques de Venise. La basilique Saint-Marc est le point focal de la place, une église vénitienne-byzantine du XIIe siècle qui est magnifiquement décorée avec des mosaïques en or et des gravures somptueuses. De chaque côté s’élèvent les Procuraties, de majestueux bâtiments qui abritaient autrefois les bureaux et appartements des procurateurs. Deux colonnes érigées en hommage aux saints de la ville, Marc et Théodore d'Amasée, se trouvent à proximité, tandis que le splendide palais des Doge's, l’imposante Campanile, la Bibliothèque nationale et plusieurs musées occupent le reste de l’espace autour de la plus grande place de Venise, qui reflète la riche histoire de la ville.

Houses of every imaginable hue line the canals of Burano - an island in the Venetian lagoon. A collection of brightly colored fisherman's cottages form the core of this modest town, vying for attention alongside teal canals plied by equally vibrant boats. Burano is famous for its lace, a local tradition that dates back to the 16th Century. Down the narrow alleys and winding paths, local women can still be seen working on these intricate works of art. Burano's Museo del Merletto chronicles the history of this craft and showcases an extensive collection of lace.
