National Museum of Funeral History

Although it sounds bizarre, National Museum of Funeral History actually provides an interesting look at the customs surrounding burial practices. View funeral memorabilia and artifacts that belonged to famous political and celebrity personalities in the "Funerals of the Famous" section of the museum. Equally intriguing is the coffin room that is filled with out-of-the-ordinary coffin themes, including giant fish, cars and a full-sized replica of King Tut's sarcophagus.

Art Car Museum

In a city like Houston where everyone spends most of the day driving, it's no wonder some innovative artists would think to turn cars into art. At the Art Car Museum, also known as the "Garage Mahal," you can see these crazy pieces on display. This unusual museum will delight visitors of all ages with cars transformed into the likes of a giant evil Easter Bunny or a gold Chevy covered in stuffed alligators called the "Swamp Mutha."

Downtown Aquarium

Have a yearning for the nautical life? Take a plunge into the deep at the Houston Downtown Aquarium. This aquarium is definitely the place to be for a fun day out. The aquarium features around 400 species of aquatic life, with the Shark Voyage being the main attraction. This voyage gives visitors the opportunity to travel via train into an acrylic viewing tunnel with live sharks swimming overhead. Other attractions include the Diving Bell Ferris wheel, the aquatic carousel and some themed educational exhibits. If you've had your fill of the aquatic life and need some grub then take a pick from the Aquarium Restaurant or Dive Lounge.

The Wilde Collection

Located on Yale Street in the heart of Houston, the Wild Collection is a unique gift shop that showcases and retails some unusual and bizarre art and craft items, creepy curiosities, rare artifacts and unique treasures from around the world. Being fans of Oscar Wilde and Edgar Allan Poe, the owners decided to get the two literary greats together and create a commercial venture that would have been identical had the authors joined forces during their time. On display are jewelry items, hair art, Victorian pieces of art and craft, unnerving old medical devices to name a few.

Glenwood Cemetery

Moss-covered angels and stately weeping cypress trees make this 150 year-old cemetery reminiscent of the Old South. It covers 65 pastoral acres and features dramatic views of Buffalo Bayou and the skyscrapers of downtown. Be sure and pay your respects to Howard Hughes when you visit. This son of Houston is buried near the ornate caretaker's cottage.
