Mizens Railway is administered by the Woking Miniature Railway Society and has many facilities for the visitors. The railway is open for public visitation on Sundays in summer. It houses a picnic area, kitchen, a shop, a ticket office and a footbridge for people to see the trains from above. There are several events conducted throughout the year; Oktoberfest and Fright Nights are some of the popular ones. It features both, steam and diesel and electric engines.
Oxhey woods located in South Oxhey, Hertfordshire is a 98 acre (39 hectares) sized local nature reserve. It has semi-natural woodlands with some areas dating back to 11,500 years ago. It is a natural habitat to a range of local plant and animal life. There are a number of trails in the park varying in difficulty but the most popular one is the famous Oxhey Woods Sculpture Trail where you can spot many beautiful wooden carvings made by children, local craftsmen and the internationally renowned wood carving artist, Dan Cordell. The woods have picnic spots, benches and a designated parking facility which makes it an ideal spot for a fun family outing.
The only remnant residence of the great poet and writer John Milton, Milton's Cottage lives up to the expectations of all those who have already read about it in his works. His most popular work, "Paradise Lost" contains several passages describing this house and the various plants that used to grow in its periphery. Four of the rooms on the ground floor of the cottage have been converted into a museum. The museum rooms display a comprehensive collection of Milton's works, and the tours vividly delineate the poet's career and his remarkable contribution towards the literary world.
The River Lee Country Park is spread over 1000 acres (404 hectares) of land and is owned and managed by the Lee Valley Regional Park Authority. It was formerly a land fill site with many gravel pits but now has been transformed into a a beautiful nature reserve with three Sites of Specific Scientific Interest. There are a number of lakes, rivers and canals in the park making it an ideal venue for activities like fishing, white water rafting, canoeing or just simply boating. Historical tours of heritage sites like Waltham Abbey Gardens and the Broxbourne old mills, family tours of the Lee Valley park Farms, a 500 meters dog agility course and a disc golf site are very popular among local families and groups. Many modern and traditional art sculptures are located around the park for visitors to explore. There also accommodation and camping facilities available if visitors choose to stay at the park. Entry to the park is free but certain activities like rafting and boating charge a fee. Most of the park areas are wheelchair access and the staff is ever ready to help people with disabilities.
Garrick's Temple to Shakespeare at Hampton is a remarkably beautiful garden folly dating back to 1756. This beauttiful structure was built at the behest of the famous actor, David Garrick, to honour the life and works of the great Bard of Avon, William Shakespeare. Garrick has performed in several plays which were originally written by Shakespeare - a fact which has contributed greatly towards his rising career. This beautiful structure houses an impressive collection of Shakespearean artifacts and relics. Situated besides the river Thames, this site is also used to host private events like meetings, parties and naming ceremonies.
Fly high at the Gatwick Aviation Museum. This one of its kind's museum is dedicated to the aircrafts in the British history. Located in the Charlwood region of Surrey, the museum dates back to the 20th Century, founded by Peter Vallance. This aerospace museum houses many types of aircraft, engines and some 500 odd aircraft models. Open on selected days, if you are lucky you may even witness a live demonstration.
