Established in 1946, only a well-worn spot could offer such specialties like steak with all the trimmings. Forget the diet, you're eating well tonight. Right across from the Warner Bros Studios, the most famous item on this menu isn't meat related—it's the cheesy garlic bread. Try the early bird specials for a great discount. No matter when you arrive, however, you'll get a great meal that is worth the price.
Since 1918, this place has been serving some of the best French dip sandwiches in the world. That seems logical because it was Philippe, The Original who claims to have invented the juicy concoction over 100 years ago. Besides the tender and succulent meat, the prices haven't changed much since either; a roast beef, pork, turkey, ham or leg of lamb sandwich will satiate your palate and leave your pocket without a dent! Want a cup of coffee? Head here for a steaming cup that will leave you feeling energized for the day.
Umami Burger deserves a special mention in the world of gourmet burgers, their new flagship location in The Grove showcasing all the trend-setting factors that have kept this local legend on top. Owner Adam Fleischman spent years tweaking and tinkering his recipe in order to produce the perfect patty, just one component of the obsessively conceived "Classic" burger that launched this expanding empire into stardom. The secret lies in Umami's signature Umami Master Sauce, an ultra-savory ultra-secret tincture that forms the marinade for each burger. Custom-made buns, provided by an anonymous baker, as well as thought-out choices such as a Parmesan chip in place of cheese, oven-roasted tomatoes and sauteed mushrooms all contribute to an overwhelming sense of umami, the Japanese word now in vogue to describe savory flavors. While Umami is rapidly spreading, their menu is anything but conventional. Each location has a signature burger, in The Grove's case this means a hand-ground patty topped with a parmesan fondue and a truffle sauce. For red meat abstainers, chicken, tuna, and veggie burgers are available, making Umami a great choice for everyone. Food-forward and tastily trend-setting, Umami Burger is a must stop.

Believe it or not, Los Angeles had a flourishing Italian-American community in the area now known as Mission/Taylor Junction. This neighborhood west of Chinatown no longer resembles that one in which the Lanza Brothers opened this shop in 1924, but thankfully the prices haven't changed that much. Inside the nondescript store, the focus is on deli sandwiches served at a great price. Simple, traditional and tasty, the trifecta of convenience is sold here at Lanza Brothers, it's no wonder why the store has been around for nearly a century.
Anytime anyone mentions Middle Eastern food, specifically kebabs in Glendale, Raffi’s comes up. This place is a wonderful find. With skewered filet mignon, ground beef, chicken, ground chicken, lamb and even mahi mahi, you can’t go wrong with whatever kebab selection you make. The rice that comes with each dish is fluffy and aromatic. Portions are extraordinarily generous and family-style eating is encouraged. Raffi’s also offers a fair selection of salads, appetizers and desserts. Don’t miss out on ordering some pickled vegetables or hummus. Most of the restaurant seating is alfresco in a courtyard.
With a simple looking dining room located in a shopping center in Northridge, LA Lasagna Co. is a great find. It’s an affordable, tasty, fast option. This humble looking eatery offers a wide variety of dishes, including their popular lasagna, other pastas, pizza, sandwiches, and salads. Prices are low, service is friendly, and delivery is available. The dining room is a decent size, but most diners get their meals to go. Local businesses enjoy the speedy lunchtime delivery. LA Lasagna Co. also features a catering menu for large, special events. The shopping center parking lot is small though, so parking can be a problem at times. -Tirui Muramoto
