Château de Nymphenburg

Avec sa façade plus longue que celle du palais de Versailles, le château de Nymphenburg était l’impressionnante résidence d’été des Wittelsbach. L’une des attractions les plus populaires à Munich, ce château et son domaine abritent plusieurs points d’intérêt qui mettent en relief différents styles architecturaux. Conçu par l’architecte baroque italien Augustino Barelli, le château a conservé ses salles de styles rococo et baroque. Orné de marbre, le Hall d’entrée en pierre polie est particulièrement intéressant, et la célèbre « Schönheitengalerie » (galerie des beautés) contenant les portraits de 36 femmes locales, est un lieu incontournable pour les visiteurs. Plusieurs palais plus petits intéressants se trouvent aussi dans le parc : l’Amalienburg, le Pagodenburg et le Badenburg. Le Marstallmuseum abrite une vaste collection de chariots, traineaux et poterie, et la Meditationskapelle (chapelle de méditation) avec sa Magdalenenklause vaut également le détour.

Schlosspark Nymphenburg

Located in the Schloss Nymphenburg, Schlosspark Nymphenburg is one of the largest parks in Munich. The picturesque green landscape, complemented by some extraordinary garden art, is the reason behind the castle garden's popularity among visitors. The entire area is spread around 229 hectares (565.87 acres) of land and is a must visit when in Munich. You can also avail of guided tours conducted by the garden authorities.

Olympiaturm

The Olympic tower at Olympiapark is the tallest building in Munich, just a little shorter than the Eiffel tower. Built by the civic council in 1965-68 for the 1972 Olympics, it provides the best view of the city and surrounding area and in good weather, it is possible to see as far as the Alps. The Olympiaturm restaurant beneath the viewing platform is open from 11a-5p and 6:30p-midnight. Apart from providing a stunning view, this rotating restaurant also serves very good dishes from around the world at reasonable prices.

Allianz Arena

Completed in 2005, the 69,901-seat Allianz Arena is home to the popular football club Bayern Munchen and was built just in time for the 2006 FIFA World Cup. Designed by Swiss architects Herzog and de Meuron, the arena is unique with its round shape and soft white facade that comes alive once it is illuminated in bright hues during games. The stadium is climate controlled and often abuzz with the roars of massive crowds cheering for their favorite teams. It also boasts of 106 luxury boxes for those wishing to go as a group. A hub of sports and culture in Germany, the stadium exudes unbridled energy of the nation's love for football.

Église Saint-Pierre

L’église Saint-Pierre, surnommé affectueusement « Alter Peter » (le vieux Pierre) est la plus ancienne église paroissiale de Munich. Les courageux visiteurs qui parviennent à gravir les 306 marches jusqu’à son sommet bénéficieront d’une vue incomparable sur la ville par temps clair, les Alpes ayant l’air presque palpables. L’église Saint-Pierre tire son nom de la vieille colline sur laquelle elle a été érigée, le Petersberg. Il y avait autrefois une chapelle sur ce site qui dut ensuite remplacée par une structure romanesque au XIIe siècle, puis par un bâtiment gothique. Au XIVe siècle, la double tour fut modifiée pour former la façade avec une seule tour que l’on voit ajourd’hui. Au fil des siècles, l’église Saint-Pierre a fait l’objet d’encore plus de modifications, principalement au cours des périodes baroque et rococo.

Erwin-von-Kreibig Museum

The Hofkistlerhaus, built in 1730, is one of the splendid buildings in front of Schloß Nymphenburg and houses a small museum devoted to the works of the Munich artist Erwin von Kreibig (1904-61). Shortly before his death, the painter was awarded the prestigious Schwabinger Kunstpreis award. Works by contemporary (local) artists are also displayed in temporary exhibitions. Admission: DEM 3.

DG Deutsche Gesellschaft für christliche Kunst

More a platform for modern spiritual art than you might expect from the name alone, the exhibitions focus on the parallels between modern art and contemporary philosophical and theological thought. This may sound very modern but the society was founded in 1893 and has its roots in the 19th century layman movement. One can explore the regular but temporary exhibitions to gain more insight into Christian art.

Kunstraum München e.V.

Kunstraum München e.V. is a private association promotes contemporary art in Munich, and originates from an early-1970s private initiative. Since then, a great deal has been done for local artists including the sponsorship of artists and the organization of over 130 exhibitions. In 1996, the association moved from Schwabing to the inner city. The association now boasts over 400 members: temporary exhibitions are organized on a regular basis. Admission is free.

Galerie Thomas

For over 35 years, Galerie Thomas has been dealing with art works from the fields of German expressionism and modern classicism and is one of the leading international galleries in this area. The gallery focuses on works by artists of the groups Blauer Reiter (Blue Rider), Brücke and Bauhaus groups (including Kandinsky, Jawlensky, Macke, Marc, Kirchner, Nolde, Schlemmer and Klee). A further pillar is art from the fifties and sixties by the likes of Nay, Winter and Ackermann. The programme is completed by contemporary artists such as Xenia Hausner, Fernando Botero and Joannis Avramidis.

Exhibitions at this gallery, which was founded in 1991, show works by national and international contemporary artists in the fields of new media, photography, painting, installations and video art. Andreas Binder Gallery is also a major art dealer and provides professional advice. The list of artists exhibiting at the gallery changes constantly, but all are relatively young. The program draws on contemporary mainstream art, and past featured artists include Ruth Biller, Walter Dahn, Tim Maguire, Markus Oehlen, Ursula Rogg and Julio Rondo.
