This gallery is characterized by its highly personalized perspective. On the one hand, it has an ascetic side, with its minimalist, purist paintings. On the other hand, there are the beginnings of what can be called philosophical poetry, and these works, often in other media such as sculpture and photography, are frequently self- referential in nature. Susanne Albrecht has a lively relationship with American galleries and artists who exhibit at her gallery include Wolfgang Ellenrieder, Wes Mills, Dennis Oppenheim, Haim Steinbach.
Located in the heart of the city, the Max Joseph Platz takes its name from King Maximilian Joseph. The National Theatre falls on the east side of the square and Hauptpost occupies its south. The square stands atop an underground parking lot and features a lovely memorial of King Maximilian. The Royal Residence is also located in the same vicinity as the square and it boasts of Renaissance, Baroque, Rococo and Neo-Classical styles of architecture.

For over 35 years, Galerie Thomas has been dealing with art works from the fields of German expressionism and modern classicism and is one of the leading international galleries in this area. The gallery focuses on works by artists of the groups Blauer Reiter (Blue Rider), Brücke and Bauhaus groups (including Kandinsky, Jawlensky, Macke, Marc, Kirchner, Nolde, Schlemmer and Klee). A further pillar is art from the fifties and sixties by the likes of Nay, Winter and Ackermann. The programme is completed by contemporary artists such as Xenia Hausner, Fernando Botero and Joannis Avramidis.
The Hauptpost (Main Post Office) was erected as the Törring Palace in 1747-58 by Johann Anton Gunetzrhainer. The north façade was added by Leo von Klenze in the mid-19th century and fits in with the style of Max-Joseph-Platz, the National Theatre and the south façade of the residence. The arcades portray a classical style, inspired by the Florentine Renaissance, as does the rest of Maximilianstraße, which heads westwards from the Maximilianeum (now the state parliament). The frescos (Die Rossebändiger) were designed by Johann Georg Hiltensperger. The building was destroyed in the Second World War but rebuilt shortly afterwards.
The main emphasis of this gallery, which has been directed since 1974 by art historian Margret Biedermann, is on twentieth century paintings, drawings and sculptures. Its programme includes examples of international contemporary art, (Robin Beers, Eduardo Chillida, Michael Goldberg, Antoni Tapiès, Tony Oursler, Claes Oldenburg) and works by artists from southern Germany (Michael Croissant, Lothar Fischer, Franz Hitzler, Siegfried Kaden, Herbert Peters).
