Blackwell Island was also referred to as Welfare Island and thus the Blackwell Island Lighthouse is also referred to as the Welfare Island lighthouse or Roosevelt Lighthouse. It is a unique structure built in stone, and is placed at the northeastern tip of Roosevelt Island. The rough ashlars in its construction adds to it beauty. It is approximately 50 feet (15 meters) tall in height and was built out of gray gneiss. After being decommissioned in the 1940s, it was designated a city landmark in 1975. Over the years, it has gained a lot of historic significance.
Eberhardt Hall is one of the oldest buildings on the New Jersey Institute of Technology campus. This mansion-like structure is a rare example of Gothic Victorian architecture in Newark. Some of the most evident features include the lavish staircase, gaslight fixtures and Victorian furnishings. This building is well-equipped with modern amenities, and its detailed architecture makes it a stand out.
The New Utrecht Reformed Church is a historic church which dates back to the 17th century. Established in 1677, the church is considered to be one of the oldest existing churches in the neighborhood of Brooklyn. However, the present church building was constructed in 1828, with a mix the Shingle, Richardsonian Romanesque and Georgian styles of architectura. The building is made of stone and stands firm on its ground even today. Regular services and ceremonies are conducted by the church till date.
Located by Little Neck Bay, the Saddle Rock Grist Mill was a historic mill used to grind grain and corn. Built in the 18th Century, it is one of the only remaining tidal-powered flour mills in the nation. Now functioning as a museum on local history, it retains its original architecture including its iconic gambrel roof shape.
The Crane-Phillips House is a Victorian-style cottage located in Cranford, New Jersey. It is now a museum which is operated by the Cranford Historical Society and it shows how life was for modest families in the Victorian opulence era. The museum displays a lot of artifacts like Native American, American Civil and Revolutionary War artifacts, to name a few. This museum was added to National Register of Historic Places on August 14, 1997.
Established in the year of 1888, First Baptist Peddie Memorial Church is a great spiritual platform. It is situated at Broad and Fulton Streets, and strives to become a religious home for culturally and ethnically divergent communities of New Jersey. The Sunday School is at 9:30a on Sundays, while the worship is at 10:30a. It follows the rare Byzantine-Romanesque style of architecture. A majestic monumental church, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1972.
