A leading woolen apparel manufacturing company, Pendleton Woolen Mills was established in 1889 Thomas L. Kay under the name of Thomas Kay Woolen Mill in the city of Salem. He, along with his family, moved their base to an old Pendleton Woolen Mills in Pendleton and in 1896 converted the mill into a textile manufacturing company giving out Native-American blankets and shawls to the people of local tribe. Since then the company has subsequently expanded its business to upto 7 textile mills and more than 70 retail stores across United States. Although currently headquartered in Portland, the mill at Pendleton serves as a retail store for its products.
