The Rocky Necropolis of Pantalica is located amid the hills of the Sortino region, a short distance from the ancient city of Syracuse. This archaeological site was excavated at the turn of the 19th Century and features five prehistoric cemeteries dating back to the Greek colonization period. The extensive landscape is replete with close to 5000 tombs that were hewn into the limestone cliffs, and contain the vestigial remains of dwellings from the 13th to the 7th Century BCE. Native flora and fauna, natural caves, and gorges are also in abundance. Pantalica, together with the archaeological site of Syracuse, is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
