Canals are artificially made to supply water to places, which have a water shortage of sorts, or simply for the means of irrigation, or as a passage for boats and ships to pass through. The Stewart Aqueduct in England was built with a purpose to carry the BCN Old Main Line Canal and join it to the new Main Line Canal. This sturdy aqueduct was built by Thomas Telford in 1829 and it involved great care, design and planning. With broad U-archways, there is enough place for the water to pass through, even in the event that there is more than normal water pressure.
