Located near the city center in Toronto, the Distillery Historic District is a prominent area of the city where the Gooderham and Worts Distillery used to operate until 1990 CE. The distillery was touted as one of the biggest facilities in the world. After its closure, the Victorian-era buildings of the property became the Distillery District of today. Today, it houses many shops, restaurants and commercial complexes. However, the historic facade of the distillery is still intact and can be seen.
Occupying an entire block in the heart of Toronto's cultural district is the famous TIFF Bell Lightbox which boasts a cinema, studios and galleries which display works of art related to cinema. Visitors here are often astonished by the mammoth collection of world cinema that is screened.
Bâtie en trois ans à partir de 1911, Casa Loma est née de l’ambition du financier canadien Sir Henry Mill Pellatt. Inspiré par les châteaux européens, Pellatt voulut employer les formidables ressources à sa disposition pour se construire un majestueux château au cœur de Toronto, une résidence à la hauteur de ses aspirations. De style néogothique, Casa Loma semble toute droit sortie des pages d’un conte de fées, abritant des passages cachés et généreusement ornée d’œuvres d’art exquises. Le château compte 98 pièces richement décorées et est entouré par un magnifique domaine qui abrite une serre, des jardins et des écuries. Les piliers sculptés du Grand Hall, les vitraux du plafond de la serre, l’impressionnante collection de livres de la bibliothèque et le tunnel souterrain menant aux écuries ne sont que quelques-uns des nombreux trésors qui caractérisent cet endroit. Le triomphe de Pellatt ne dura cependant pas très longtemps en raison de la fermeture de ses entreprises au lendemain de la Première guerre mondiale, l’obligeant à vendre sa maison. De nos jours, Casa Loma est un musée et accueille des événements populaires.
Located in the artist-rich 401 Building, this artist-run gallery has been at the leading edge of multi-disciplinary contemporary art since its inception in 1971. The center is actively engaged in a policy of artistic cross-pollination regardless of discipline, culture, gender or sexual orientation. A Space Gallery also encourages new artistic media and technologies. The center is also one of the sponsors of the Community Arts Biennale.
The Heliconian Hall exudes a Victorian charm and a laid-back elegance. This concert hall at the Toronto Heliconian Club boasts of beautiful rose windows, vaulted ceilings and intricately decorated entrances. It can house a decent crowd, and is used for music concerts, dramatics and other performing arts. The grand piano at the hall is truly a delightful sight. Temple Emanu-El is among the few old synagogues of Toronto. It was established in 1960 and since then has been an integral part of the Jewish community. Designed beautifully, the synagogue has numerous attractions. The intricate Arc with Ner Tamid is structured superbly. The Kiddush Room is a peaceful place where Minyans are held. There is a beautiful Biblical Garden just outside the room. This synagogue has two Bimahs facing each other with a round stained glass wall besides it. There is also a spacious Social Hall where functions and events are conducted. Members can also browse through the collection of books at the synagogues library. All in all, it is a magnificent synagogue worth visiting.
Eaton Lecture Theatre is housed within the Rogers Communications Center, a part of the Ryerson University in Toronto. The theater-styled lecture room is used for classroom sessions, seminars and meetings. The Toronto Section of the Audio Engineering Society (AES) holds a meeting at the Eaton Theatre on the last Tuesday of every month. Call ahead for more information.
Fred Thury Studio Theatre situated on the second floor of Vanier college is a performing arts theater that is home to the Vanier College Productions. Apart from playing host to performing arts program of the college, this modest theater also hosts performances of the local theater groups and performing artists. Being situated on the campus of York University, the majority of the fans attending the various performances at the Fred Thury Studio are students. The intimate theater makes you feel part of the performance adding to the overall experience.
