At the heart of the Burnaby Lake Regional Park is the eponymous lake, a stellar body of water that was the remnant of a prehistoric glacier. While the lake's spectacular shoreline was dotted with a slew of sawmills during the late 19th Century, there is no semblance of commercial activity anymore. What is left behind across its sprawling 311-hectare (70-acre) expanse is a soul-stirring terrain inhabited by diverse wildlife species. A grove of deciduous trees dominates the marshy areas in the park, while smaller thickets of plants like bladderworts and sedges form tufts at its base. Living amid these great woodlands are over 400 species of birds, animals and reptiles, from green herons and bald eagles, to turtles, beavers and diving ducks. Visitors can canoe and kayak across the lake's expanse, one of the best ways to drink in the park in all its glory.
