James Monroe Museum and Memorial Library

Administered by the University of Mary Washington, the James Monroe Museum and Memorial Library is dedicated to the life of James Monroe and his family. The museum houses a collection of more than 1,600 artifacts that were passed on by the descendants of the 5th President of the United States during the initiation of the museum in 1927. Today, the museum not only houses these artifacts but also more than 10,000 historic documents and 3,000 volumes of books inside its library. The museum and the library is open throughout the year.

Rising Sun Tavern

Rising Sun Tavern is a popular historical building that attracts many local and tourists for its intriguing history. Built in 1760, it was a former residence to Charles Washington, younger brother of George Washington. The house was later converted into a tavern serving food and drinks but was discontinued. Today it remains a sight of the past with artifacts, antiques and motifs all archiving the early 18th century life.

Trolley Tours of Fredericksburg

One of the best ways to explore the historical sites of Fredericksburg is to take the famous trolley tours. The charming vintage-looking buses are a delight to road around in. Typically, a tour lasts for more than an hour and visitors can see the historic downtown and the Civil war monuments.

Chatham Manor

Chatham Manor is a historical building that was constructed in the year 1771 by statesman William Fitzhugh. At present, the manor house serves as the headquarters of Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park. Major portion of the building serves as office space while five of the rooms are filled with exhibits. Guided tours are provided to visitors by park volunteers. There are also audio visual shows on Fredericksburg civilian experience that are presented to the visitors.

Kenmore

Historic Kenmore Gardens is a popular attraction for both locals and tourists. Built in 1929 by The Garden Club of Virginia, the gardens feature varieties of plants, flowers, shrubs and more. In 1992, the Wilderness Walk was created that includes many Native American plants. The plantation was built by the sister and brother-in-law of former American President, George Washington and therefore holds much historical significance. Events here include outdoor lectures, games, story telling and other community gatherings. The property is maintained by the Kenmore Garden Guild and is a popular tourist site.

Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park

The Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania Battlefield and Military Park is a historic site reflecting the tragedy of the American Civil War. It is the location of four major battles that took place in the war namely Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, The Wilderness, and Spotsylvania. The park spreads across 8374 acres (3389 hectares) and encompasses buildings and grounds that are associated with the battles. With guided tours, a visitor center, a museum, and film screenings, there is ample material available for visitors to get an insight and learn all there is to know about this place's history and significance.
