"Colorful Creativity"

The Karatsu Kunchi Matsuri is an annual Autumn festival of Japan where large colorful floats called Hikiyama are paraded down the streets in the honor of the karatsu-jinja. These Hikiyama are designed at the Hikiyama Float Exhibition Hall, and can be seen by tourists throughout the year. Each float is beautifully decked up in gold and silver, and created in the shape of dragons, helmets and fishes. The Red Lion or Akajishi is the most famous exhibit, dating back to 1819. Take a good look at the intricate handiwork of the artisans here, to learn more about the cultural wealth of the area.
