"15th-century Tower House"
Fourteen miles outside of Galway and near the pretty village of Oughterard stands this 15th-century tower house. Built by the DeBurgos, an old elite merchant family, it was later appropriated by the O'Flahertys and became their principal residence for many years. Cromwellians later used this castle as a stronghold during the 17th century to defend the approach to Galway from the west. Now owned by the Office of Public Works, the castle has been restored and returned to its former glory. It is open to the public from late Spring to early Autumn.
