Montepescali, which is a small town in the Tuscan region, is also called the Maremma terrace or balcony because it has view points from which beautiful vistas of the archipelagos and beaches can be seen. Built at the site of Saint Galgano's hermitage, the ruins of this medieval, Cistercian abbey stand tall amid rolling hills and fields of blooming sunflowers. As the legend goes, Saint Galgano arrived at the peak of Monte Siepi after renouncing the hedonistic pleasures of his former life as a knight in 1170. Here, he drove his sword into the ground, its hilt and shaft taking the form of a cross. Today, the sword still survives, enshrined in the Montesiepi Chapel nearby. The Abbey of San Galgano was built nearby in the 13th Century by Cistercian monks, and although it survived for centuries thereafter, it never truly prospered and was eventually abandoned after its roof collapsed in the 18th Century. What remain are the walls of the grand, Gothic church, sheltered only by the vivid blue sky that arches above. Despite its ruinous state, much of the original architectural design has survived, creating an enchanting picture of bereft beauty against the bucolic backdrop. Today, the abbey plays host to summer concerts.
