"Glorious Past"
Perched on a rocky cliff, overlooking the bay, Dunure Castle though a shadow of its great past, is still a magnificent structure dominating the village of Dunure. Abounding with stories and myths, this ruin was once a magnificent castle of the Kennedys of Carrick and played an important role in Scottish history. However it gradually ceased in importance and by the 17th Century. Dating back to the 12th Century, this place is best remembered for two things - when Mary, Queen of Scots stayed for three days in the castle and the roasting of Allan Stewart, the Commendator of Crossraguel. Its underground tunnels add to the mystery of this historical structure. Though it is a steep climb, there are plenty of grassy areas to rest and picnic.
