Kungportsavenyn, or Avenyn as it is commonly known, is the main street in Gothenburg, which goes all the way from Kungportsplatsen up to Götaplatsen. Avenyn is packed with cafes, restaurants, pubs, nightclubs and shops. It was designed after European streets like the Viennese Ringstraße and was built in the 1860s, though it was completed only in the 1930s. Nordstan is one of the largest shopping centers in Scandinavia. With over 150 shops, restaurants and cafes, it occupies the same area as 12 football pitches. What started as a store selling outdated/unsold clothing in 1997, is today one of Gothenburg's premier fashion brands - Velour. It was his clientele of local musicians and designers that inspired owner Per Andersson to open his first and only flagship store in Gothenburg. The brand's first collection was launched in 2005, and today provides both men and women with a range of comfortable apparel, and keeps up with the latest trends. Bengans, named after its founder Bengt, is a classic in Gothenburg. The record shop is housed in a cinema and here you will find most types of music, ranging from the obscure to the latest hits. There is a special department for classical music and jazz. In addition to this, Bengans has a guitar department squeezed into the shop. Next to this is a small stage used for various purposes, often for performances by current artists. The best thing about Bengans is the service. Butik Kubik is a store combined with studio where Stina and Anna Borg Saltzman design and make clothes and Sara Ring designs, makes and repairs jewelry. You can also find products by other designers here. Every Wednesday at 6:30p the girls organize an event called Kväll i Källaren, "an evening in the basement." There you can see all kinds of performances, from concerts to poetry readings. The small size of the space makes the shows intimate and unique.
