"Iceland's Highest Peak"

Forming the ice-glazed summit of the Öræfajökull volcano, the Hvannadalshnjúkur is the highest of Icelandic peaks, soaring above earth at a height of 2109.6 meters (6921 feet). This glorious peak invites a fair share of backcountry trekkers, albeit not without apprehension. The last full blown eruption on the volcano occurred in 1362, followed by another, less intense eruption in 1727. Owing to its challenging topography, the Hvannadalshnjukur may seem like a thrilling ascent to intrepid trekkers, but still calls for the accompaniment of seasoned guides. Once on top, the peak rewards one with bewildering views of the Icelandic landscape and beyond.
