"Ancient Rock Structure"

A giant monolith with irregularly cut edges, the Hvitserkur dominates the eastern shore of the beautiful Vatnsnes peninsula. This interesting rock behemoth is thought to be the remnant of a volcano that existed eons of years ago. With the incessant crashing of the sea against the base of the volcano, it gradually eroded, leaving behind a plug in its wake. There is also a mythical explanation behind the Hvitserkur. Legend goes that the Hvitserkur was originally a troll who roamed the lands of Strandir, and was turned to stone as night turned to day. Rising 15 meters (50 feet) above sea level, its giant form is shrouded in patches of guano, or excrement left behind by seabirds, and thus translates into the phrase 'white shirt'.
