"Designed Skulls"

The basement of 12th-century St. Michaels' Chapel is not a regular ossuary. Named the Beinhaus, this space is home to more than 100 skulls, of which approximately 600 have been painted upon. The artworks include names, dates of birth and death, symbols, floral patterns and more. The skulls date back to the 1600s, when the adjoining graveyard was disentombed and the skulls were preserved in the chapel. Though this practice has been dwindling since the 1960s, the latest addition to the tomb was made in 1995, in accordance with the dying woman's last wish.
