The history of the Museum Elbinsel Wilhelmsburg dates back to 1907, when it was founded by a local historical society that wished to preserve the antiquities of the time. In early 20th Century, when the wave of industrialization swept over Hamburg's Wilhelmsburg neighborhood, many humble dwellings had to be demolished for the setting up of industries. The society aimed at conserving the furnishings and decorations of these houses, setting them up for display at the Museum Elbinsel Wilhelmsburg. After a long search for an ideal location, the museum finally set base in a historical building, where it has been delighting visitors with its wonderful collection for more than six decades.
