Thăng Long Imperial Citadel

Thăng Long Imperial Citadel was first established in the 11th Century by the Ly Dynasty. The site has remained at the center of the country's political life for centuries before and after the establishment of the citadel. The complex once spread over a vast area, and was composed of numerous buildings and structures, of which the best preserved are those of the central sector located within the modern day city of Hanoi. Although most of the structures associated with the citadel fell in to a state of disrepair by the end of the 19th Century due to the invasion of Hanoi by the French, in recent years care has been taken to excavate and restore much of the citadel's historic landscape. Established at the crossroads between China and the ancient kingdom of Champa, the citadel chronicles the unique culture and the confluence of the various influences that led to its development. Take a guided tour of Thăng Long Imperial Citadel to learn in detail about the citadel's relevance in Hanoi's history.

Hoa Lo Prison (Hanoi Hilton)

If you haven’t yet visited the Hoa Lo Prison (Hanoi Hilton), then you should definitely drop in during your next trip to Hanoi. The prison was built in 1896 by the French, and then later in 1954, the Vietnamese took over. The French used it for political prisoners and then the Vietnamese used it during the war. Later, it was used as a detention prison when Senator John McCain was senator and even held Pete Peterson as a prisoner. Although only a part of the original prison is left, much of the equipments used earlier are still intact, and so is a tunnel which was once used as an escape route. There is one exhibition room where the details of the happenings in the prison are documented in photographs, and stories by the inmates are displayed. Although, the stories are recorded as per the Vietnamese’s side of the story. Over the years, the prison has gone to become a major tourist attraction in the city and an integral part of its rich history.

Ho Chi Minh's Residence

Ho Chi Minh's Residence was abode to the President, and is much visited by many for its quaint colonial architecture and humble ambiance. The President refused to live in the lavish Presidential Palace nearby and instead made this petite stilt-house his home. The house faces an idyllic lake and is surrounded by beautiful rose bushes and Caribbean trees. You can stroll inside through the basement which was used for political meetings and the other spaces within that have his memorabilia on display. An intriguing visit!
