The history of the Schelmentoren can be traced back to the 12th century, when it was built. Constructed on the order of Theoderich Van Are, this tower boasts of Medieval Style architecture. Built as a living tower for the Counts van Ahr-Houstaden, and their inheritors, this tower was also used as a prison later. This tower is considered among one of the oldest structures in Herleen.
