"Iceland's Oldest Hall"
Amid soft expanses of unfettered grass, an array of nearly 20 turf houses merge beautifully with Iceland's rustic landscape. This lovely collection of rural Icelandic architecture constitutes the Keldur farm. While the sod-covered houses are similar in construction, one structure that stands out prominently from all others is the historic Keldur Hall, a legendary part of the Icelandic Njal's Saga. This stunning dichromatic building is steeped in Norse history, and dates back to the 11th century, when a religious leader by the name of Jon Loftsson inhabited it. This well-preserved structure yielded another exciting discovery in 1932, when a narrow escape tunnel was discovered in its floor. The tunnel was speculated to be a nifty getaway, leading to the other side of the hill. Together with the hall and the row of turf houses, the Keldur estate forms a nostalgic link to Iceland's storied past.
