Tavastia

Generally considered the definitive live venue in Helsinki, Tavastia is conveniently located, right by the main bus station in Kamppi. Live artists, local and foreign, are featured on many nights every week. The club is open on other nights as well, and since the place is owned by a university student organisation, special events are frequent. Short music festivals focusing on certain genres are also common, and twice a year record fairs draw in a crowd. In terms of acoustics, Tavastia is one of the best live venues in town, though it is relatively small. Its maximum capacity is less than a thousand people, only just over half of whom can fit into the actual live side of the club. Therefore, many artists playing there sell out, even when they play for two or more nights in a row.

St. Urho's Pub

Located in Etu-Töölö behind the National Museum and next to Parliament, St. Urho's Pub was opened over 20 years ago, making it one of the most popular of traditions with locals. A wide selection of bottled ale and beers on tap are available and the menu has everything from small to huge meals. There is never a cover charge, even during live music performances.

Storyville

The best-known jazz club in Helsinki, Storyville resides in a basement where the red brick walls scream New Orleans. This is a place for those who like to sit down, enjoy drinks and listen to a band playing light, easy jazz; you can always pop in and expect a live performance. Guest musicians are often from abroad. Storyville is especially popular on weekends, but you can wait in the upstairs pub if the club is full.

Cafe Mockba

Café Mockba has all the charm of the former Soviet Republic, and Eastern European Bolsheviks. A spartan 1970's throw back to the USSR, Café Mockba offers quite an experience. Originally opened as an escape for the owners of the Corona bar next door, the idea was to have a small bar that was tucked away, serving a lousy selection of drinks and sandwiches that are sold the day after they're made. Dirty, faded curtains prevent visibility from the street and an old record player plays yesterday's Soviet hits. Despite its best efforts at anonymity, Café Mockba is now a favorite with the tourists. The bar was blessed by a conductor from the Red Army's Musicians of the Corps, who splashed vodka on the walls to keep the cats away. If washed out, used up, and broken down is your idea of chic, then Café Mockba should be at the top of your list anytime you are in Helsinki.

Cafe Bar 9

Located in the effervescent downtown area, this café is the ideal spot to unwind. You will always find students, professionals and shoppers here, thanks to its delightful fare and late hours. The menu is simple, yet delectable; try the pastas, salads, sandwiches and dig into scrumptious desserts. So now you know where to halt after your long shopping bout!

Erottaja Bar

Erottaja Bar is a quiet, relaxed bar where you can drink anything from coffee to beer, chat and listen to background jazz. You could also groove to the tunes of popular DJs or sing along your favorite song at the karaoke bar which boasts a staggering 7600 songs to choose from. Most of the interior design was done by students who generally frequent the bar. The atmosphere is warm and friendly: a place for young intellectuals to hang out. The minimum age for admission is 20.
