Built in 1865 as the Civil War ended by freed slaves in a coastal vernacular architectural style, this African-American "Prayer House" was given other freed slaves. Located in the historic district of Beaufort, it was used as a church, meeting hall and community center. In addition to weekly worship services, visitors are welcome to tour the church and attend musical events and concerts held here. Well, there is! Palmetto Oaks Sculpture Garden is meant for that. Located near the May River, the Palmetto Oaks Sculpture Garden is Stephen Kishel’s 60 years of creative work, showcased in his one-acre (4047 square meter) live oak and native palm garden gallery. His abstract sculptures are made out of metal and stand graciously across the garden. Kishel’s sculptures have their descriptions in the form of his poetry or philosophy. From an early age, Kishel realized that he was capable of expressing himself through his art, a conviction that has followed through his whole life. Look for the red canopied carriage at Waterfront Park where an hour's tour of historic downtown Beaufort begins every 40 minutes. Start times vary seasonally; so check the website or call for times. Your guide is very knowledgeable about the city's history from its founding through the Civil War and to modern times. Points of interest include mansions, churches, landmarks and even where original brick streets are covered by asphalt (where the bricks are exposed from wear). For newcomers, this tour is an excellent way to get introduced to a beautiful city. Tickets can be purchased at the Beaufort Visitor Center in the Arsenel on Craven Street or at the carriage booth at the park. Parking is by self-serve kiosk (put the receipt on your dashboard). Be sure to buy at least two hours (or more) to leave room for exploring downtown, strolling the park that has a view of Hunting Island, the marina and the harbor. - Natasha Lawrence

Even if it had not served as the most memorable setting in the 1994 novel, Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, this remarkable graveyard would still draw the curious. The moss-covered graves and monuments in this storied cemetery date back over two centuries, and mark the resting places of soldiers, generals, plantation owners and Savannah families of note. Don't come looking for the famous Bird Girl statue, however. This signature icon of Midnight Madness was relocated to the Telfair Museum.

Located along the Beaufort River, Henry C. Chambers Waterfront Park is a popular place to relax and unwind for individuals as well as families. Rest under the cool shade of trees and breathe in the breeze from the river here. Enjoy the sight of blooming flowers, watch a performance or organize a picnic with your family at this park. Along with offering a bevy of recreational opportunities, the park also hosts eclectic festivals. When in Beaufort, a visit to the Henry C. Chambers Waterfront Park ensures a delightful time.

Constructed of brick and tabby, enlarged, modified and repaired over two centuries, this historic landmark has been involved in the Revolutionary War, the Civil War and the 1861 Battle of Port Royal, and has been connected with the Yemassee Indians, Spaniards and pirates. It has housed the Beaufort Volunteer Artillery, the National Guard, the Historic Beaufort Foundation, the Beaufort County Historical Society and today, the Beaufort Visitor Center. The museum features relics, two 1779 British guns, uniforms, letters, photos and weapons exhibits such as World War I hand grenades, Confederate sabers and a 1915 machine gun. It also tells the story of the Sea Islands, which was important to the development of Beaufort. A visit to the Arsenal museum will also take you to the Visitor Center that provides guide books, maps of Beaufort, souvenirs and tour assistance. The museum and Visitor Center is closed on Wednesday and Sunday. There is no admission charge to the museum, but donations are welcome. -Natasha Lawrence
