Top Rated Attractions in Hilton Head

Folly Field Beach Park

A pristine beach offering a great atmosphere for unwinding and letting off steam, Folly Field Beach Park is one of the most visited places in Hilton Head. Facilities like outdoor showers, lounge chair and umbrella rentals add to the joy of visiting this fun family destination. Swim, surf or simply relax as you watch the waves crash into the beach; there is a whole lot to unravel at one of Hilton Head’s most tranquil destinations, the Folly Field Beach Park.

Fish Haul Creek Park

Spanish moss drapes the large oak trees that fill this park on the northernmost tip of the Hilton Head Island. It is considered to be the most pristine of all the island's parks, even though its location adjacent to the airport causes considerable noise pollution. You can head down to the water at Port Royal Sound and join the locals in the popular low-tide activity of clamming, or enjoy a picnic at one of the pavilions. It is a nice getaway for nature lovers, and a glimpse of the former terrain of the island.

Pirates Island Golf

With a slogan like "Where miniature golf is an adventure", this place is fun for the whole family or couples. Choose from two different 18-hole courses, the Black Beard and the Capt. Kidd Challenge. Both provide lots of shade, water features, a lagoon with fish (the kids can buy food to feed them along the course), a variety of challenging hazards, funny pirate props, cannons, misty fog and decorations. Walkways are wide enough for strollers. Each hole has a sign with interesting pirate history tidbits. Get a free game if you make a hole-in-one. Specials include all day play for an extra USD5. Check website for printable discount coupons. Opens daily at 9a, closing times vary by season; so call in advance. Also, parking is on-site and has a snack bar available. - Natasha Lawrence

Pinckney Island National Wildlife Refuge

Pinckney Island National Wildlife Reserve is a large island between Savannah and the island of Hilton Head. What was once land owned by a Native American trader, the island refuge later went on to become a magnanimous shelter for abundant plant and animal life. The site is also noteworthy for containing around 115 archaeological artifacts ranging from the Archaic era to the Mississippi era. Within its forests, salt marshes and fallows, lie a wealth of animals like salamanders, egrets, deer and American alligators. The refuge is where hiking trails weave through dense woods and serene ponds lure an array of shorebirds and wading birds.

Coligny Beach Park

Coligny Beach is the bustling heart of this resort island. It features all the amenities one might expect from such a tourist hotspot, including volleyball nets, restrooms, changing rooms, showers, and even a few beach-side bars. Sunbathers flock to the seashore for some warming rays, while the fine, hard sand in the area makes walking and biking along the shore popular activities year-round. Located nearby the popular downtown shopping area of Coligny Plaza, this beach can get very crowded during the peak season, but if you simply walk a few hundred yards away from the center of activity, you will find some peace and quiet once again.

Coastal Discovery Museum

The people of Hilton Head banded together and placed stringent zoning restrictions on their island. As a result, a great deal of the region's ecosystems remain untouched, making Hilton Head an ideal place to get closer to nature. The Coastal Discovery Museum further facilitates that connection by providing visitors with a bevy of interactive exhibits, programs and tours that impart an expanse of knowledge about the intricacies of Lowland South Carolina's web of eminently biodiverse wetlands. When in town, pay a visit to the museum and stroll around its picturesque environs to soak in the pleasant atmosphere of this small town.
