"A Mirror To Antarctica"

The Mawson's Huts Replica Museum recreates a prolific version of the original hut that served home to Sir Douglas Mawson and his team during their expedition to Antarctica from 1911-1914. The recreated hut sits on the waterfront of the city, nearly close to the same place from which the SY Aurora sailed further south to the deathly cold continent. Built from the same Baltic pine walls used in the original hut, the museum includes snippets from the daily lives of the expeditioners, including wooden bunk beds, heaters and a smattering of otherwise insignificant luxuries such as whiskey and chocolate. Such is the sense of wonder in this tiny hut that one almost hears the howling wind, and feels a chill run down the spine as they imagine the hardships faced by this intrepid expedition team. The small entrance fee collected at the hut is collectively redirected toward the preservation of the original hut in Antarctica.
