Hobart Brewing Company is a great local brewery that features a tap room and event space. Visitors can enjoy beer flights and savor the local flavor of Tasmanian beer brewed in house. The brewery's signature brews include Harbour Master, a copper ale made with three kinds of hops; Saint Christopher Cream Ale, an ale with a sweet aftertaste; and the Iron Pot Rye Porter, a robust brew with chocolate undertones. The ambiance is relaxed and local events often take place here, making this a great place to stop by.
Producing some fine examples of beer, Cascade Brewery is Australia's oldest brewery established by Peter Degraves in 1832. The two-hour tour is informative and you can watch first-hand the brewing process and learn about the history of brewing in Australia, as well as the history of the building. Cascade beer is brewed from Tasmanian hops and barley and pure water from further up Mount Wellington. There is a museum of brewing and you can wander through the beautiful Woodstock Gardens.
Tea-for-two or perhaps 42-degrees south? Tavern 42 Degrees South is a clever name for a classy waterfront dining and drinking spot. Summer brings late twilight in Hobart so on a warm evening it is hard to imagine a nicer alfresco drinking spot so close to the water. In winter, the crowds ensure that it is cozy inside, although with the crowds comes noise. Most people come here for the bar and the conviviality of drinking with friends, but the food is good too. The specials board is worth checking.

This is a particularly good place to be at for having a great time. Live music plays from Tuesday to Sunday with blues and folk styles popular. It is a typical pub: smoky, noisy and atmospheric, so it is not the place for an intimate conversation. Standing near the bar will soon have you soaking up the ambiance. Guinness is on tap but you can also find many other beer varieties. Meals include pasta or a decent steak. The house specialty is beef and Guinness pie. Call ahead or check the website for more details.

This historic pub has been completely destroyed by bush fires and rebuilt. Boasting a wonderful covered outdoor stage, this venue has a large local following and every Sunday afternoon, rain or shine, local and international musicians play from about 3p onwards. There are several open fires, pool tables and the longest Huon Pine bar in the world. Around 4:30p in the afternoon, the locals start getting off work and the up market nibbles come out with an Australian cheese selection, fruit and dips courtesy of the owners. There is no restaurant fare available, although there are snacks and toasted sandwiches should you have the munchies. Stop in for a winter warmer or in the warmer months, an ice cold beer. With friendly staff and locals to chat with, you can't go wrong. -Janice Barton
