Recognized as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site, the Völklinger Hütte or the Völklingen Ironworks is a historic industrial site of national importance, as well as a popular tourist attraction. This gigantic factory was a pioneer of the iron and steel industry of Germany during the 19th and 20th Centuries and must have processed millions of tonnes of pig iron. Today, it has been converted into a science and technology museum and event venue. Several well-marked trails make their way across the complex, leading you past attractions like the visitor's center, the Ferrodrom science center and the old coking plant which has now been transformed into a garden for exotic plants. The site also hosts a variety of temporary exhibitions and serves as a concert venue during summer.
