"Witness a Calving"
With its icy blue chimneys and rugged tips, Eqip Sermia is one of Greenland's most active calving glaciers. When the glacier calves, for a moment, the deafening silence of this far removed locale is shattered, giving way to the sound of crashing waves and the unmistakable thunder-clap of cracking ice. Large and small chunks of the ice cap break off at fairly regular intervals, piercing the tranquil water as they tumble off, giving rise to towering waves of steely water. The glacier lies at the head of a fjord about 80 kilometers (50 miles) north of Ilulissat, and is a popular day-trip destination. While Greenland is replete with glaciers, the Eqip Sermia is one of the few that is both easily accessible and calves at least a few times every day.
