The Flowers of Kaffeklubben Island
"The Northernmost Flowers in the World"
Oft touted as the northernmost point of land in the world, Kaffeklubben Island plays host to a rare and enchanting phenomenon. Each summer, amid the barren polar terrain thrive fields of Arctic Poppy and Purple Saxifrage, transforming the landscape into a striking collage of yellow and purple - a stunning contract to the usual unending sea of white and grey. Lashed by the harsh winter chill for most of the year, the island's top soil is meager at best, reaching a depth of only about an inch above the gravel and permafrost. This, together with the frigid temperature, makes it impossible for anything besides these flowers, moss, litchen and liwerworts to survive. A symbol of resilience in the face of some of the harshest conditions known to man, these flowers are the last you will encounter as you move further north. The island is located just north of Cape Morris Jesup and is the northernmost point of Greenland, if not the world.
