Arboretum Groenlandicum

In a far-flung spot at the edge of southern Greenland, the town of Narsarsuaq is home to a bevy of arboreal beauty that is equal parts strange and splendid. Representing a case of ingenious experimental forestry, Greenland established the Arboretum Groenlandicum, a man-made forest of sorts in a bid to renew its otherwise barren expanse of land. Since the ice-capped landscape of Greenland was not conducive of any kind of natural cultivation, Greenland took matters into its own hands. It sowed its soil with seeds and saplings borrowed from its European neighbors, thus creating its very own homegrown backyard. In a dazzling expanse that spans more than 200 hectares (494.2 acres), the Arboretum Groenlandicum is home to several subarctic tree species like the Himalayan Birch, the Norwegian Spruce, Scots pine, and lodgepole pine, among several others.
