"Of Mighty Glaciers"

Swiftly and silently floating across Atlantic waters to meet its terminus, the mighty Jakobshavn Glacier is an outlet glacier in West Greenland. Also known as Sermeq Kujalleq in Greelandic parlance, the glacier undergoes a process of calving each year, where huge slabs of ice disintegrate from its ice-faced body to form icebergs. The glacier sheds off enough ice to account for nearly 10 percent of Greenlandic icebergs, and is known to tap 6.5 percent of the Greenland Ice Sheet. It is one of the fastest moving glaciers in the region. More than just a gigantic chunk of solid ice, the Jakobshavn Glacier is also known to play a significant role in studying the impact of climate change and icecap glaciology.
