The mighty fortifications protected the city against invasion for almost 1,000 years, ensuring the survival of the Byzantine Empire. The Theodosian Land Walls were erected under Emperor Theodosius II in the 5th century and are still considered a masterpiece of their kind today. Over a length of about 20 km they had 82 towers and 12 gates. The wide walls were equipped with all the tricks at the disposal of the owners and many of them are preserved to this day.
