It caused quite a stir whenever the popular Roman chariot races were held on the square. Built in the early 3rd century, the arena could accommodate 100,000 spectators. Emperor Constantine I had the Egyptian column brought to Constaninople from Egypt. Today the square is also embellished with the bronze serpentine column from the temple of Apollo in Delphi and the German Fountain from the late 19th century.
