Steintor Bernau situated on the Hussitenstrasse is the only standing structure of the original three city walls built to protect the city against enemy invasions. This stone gate was built in the 15th century in Gothic style and is one of the most popular attractions in the city. Steintor Bernau features a clock tower and houses a local history museum which exhibits medieval weapons, tools, utensils and artifacts explaining the brewing history of the city.
Since 1974, this building has been home to one of the most important recording studios in Germany. Hansa Studios counts several quintessential albums by artists such as David Bowie, Iggy Pop, and Depeche Mode among the many landmark recordings they have helped to create. Also located in this building is the historic Meistersaal, the famed chamber music concert hall known for its excellent acoustics and as a venue for classical music performances.
Schloss Charlottenburg's landscape gardens are a true feast for the eyes. Now a popular destination for a relaxing Sunday afternoon stroll, the royal gardens were first designed in the 17th century and gradually added to over the ensuing years. Some parts of the garden display the original French style, while much of the rest of the park was re-landscaped as an English garden in the early 19th century. Dotted with numerous small buildings and sculptures, the mausoleum (containing the tombs of Queen Luise and Friedrich Wilhelm III), the pond and the Belvedere tea house are particularly noteworthy. After exploring the gardens, visitors could have a coffee in the Orangery or head off by boat to the other great royal palaces in Potsdam.
