Cafe Dupont

Cafe Dupont maintains a close relationship with the farmers of the region, and owner Chris Dupont handpicks the ingredients for his guests. This French restaurant believes in the "Slow Food" philosophy with its use of organically grown local produce. The restaurant has a concise menu and you won't have any trouble deciding on the Apalachiola oyster and okra with horseradish, followed by a dessert of dark chocolate cake and bananas foster. Have a glass of cordial before you say au revoir!

Even though this restaurant is named after a town in the region of Emilia-Romagna, the focus inside the wood-fired ovens is definitely Neapolitan. Award-winning Birmingham chef James Lewis creates not only delicious pies, but his kitchen makes its own pasta daily. For instance, the spaghetti with lamb sausage, mint, local heirloom tomatoes and parsley is novel, yet simple and the Brown Butter Poached Lobster Risotto is extraordinary. The interior is modern with sleek bars, tables and floors, and since it is located across the way from the Market at Pepper Place, it is a nice spot to visit after shopping.

Todd English P.U.B

With just this location and another in Las Vegas, celebrity chef Todd English presents a mishmash of dishes that range from classic sliders and chicken wings to lobster rolls and Ahi tuna wontons. One look at the menu and you will see many familiar items like fish & chips, French dips, Reuben sandwiches and burgers, but chef Todd amplifies them with his own particular flair. Just as with his location in Vegas, this space exudes modern elegance with a tinge of nostalgia in the tin ceilings and open bay window seating, and it is far more convivial than pretentious.

Pies & Pints

Pies & Pints serves superb suds and perfect pizzas, a pub/restaurant in which everybody will find a favorite on the menu. The pints include selections from all over the country in a variety of styles, from IPAs to Lagers, and once you see the beer menu, it will take you a while to peruse through the mind-boggling amount of pints. The kitchen makes its own dough and the ovens bake pies of all types as well, from create-your-own to their specialty pizza, the ingredients come as you like. Some of the specialty pies are a little wacky, but delicious nonetheless. Try the Sriracha Shrimp, the Grape & Gorgonzola or the Cuban Pork for a change from the ordinary.

Green Acres Cafe

Green Acres Cafe is a chicken wing specialist, where the kitchen prepares thousands of them every week. In addition to wings, the menu is simple, straight-forward and no-frills, with items like the ubiquitous Southern fried green tomatoes, okra and whitefish. If you prefer chicken gizzards and livers, Green Acres prepares some of the best in town. To drink, it's water, tea, soda or fountain-drinks all the way.

Yeh Man Caribbean Restaurant

Downtown Birmingham has a slew of soul-food and Caribbean themed restaurants. One of the better ones along 4th Avenue is definitely Yeh Man, where the Jerk Chicken is spicy and the Oxtail is braised perfectly. Guests have their choice of goat, oxtail, chicken or vegetarian and the option to prepare it stewed, Jerk style, or in a delicious curry. Whatever you choose, the plates are authentic and the prices are always right.
