The Trollekelder (literally: Troll Cave) is situated at Sint-Jacobs, the square that is traditionally the centre of the Gentse Feesten.
Downstairs, as you might have guessed, sweet little trolls are there to keep you company. You will not find any snacks here, but you are in the right place if you want to try a special beer: the Trollekelder serves no fewer than 150 (!) different kinds of beer - especially Trappist and abbey beers. And last but not least : the pub also has its own beer, Trollebier, which is certainly worth a try. In short: all beer lovers to the Trollekelder!
La Fayette is the famous French novelist who wrote La princesse de Clèves, but this bar is not named after her. It is named after the French general who fought in the American Civil War. His Declaration of Rights of Man and Citizen was the starting point of the discussions about the Constitution. La Fayette was a republican and moderate revolutionary, who later also showed up in Paris in 1830. A man with balls! He was definitely fascinating enough to give this bar its name.
The bar itself? Well, considering Langestraat it may seem a little out of place. The music (soul, R&B etc.) is not very loud and the interior is rather simple (wooden tables and chairs). The public are mostly elderly young and young elderly. Maybe you'll find revolutionaries here.
Just a good bar!
