Kotoran Spa

Kotoran Spa can be found in the Japanese metropolitan city, Kyoto. It is a part of the services offered by the Kyoto Royal Hotel. The Sanjo-Agaru area is where the ancient imperial city used to be, and it still retains the characteristics and charm of another time. Kotoran employs a traditional use of the ancient Japanese therapeutic arts, which is seen in the form of the Shiatsu massages, the bamboo wooden furniture and the impenetrable calm.

Ryozen Museum of History

For an overview of the impact that the Meiji restoration had on Japan's modern history, this is the place to visit. Through videos and displays of personal memorabilia of the major players in this pivotal event in Japanese history, which resulted in the new government retaining many traditional values while adapting many Western ideas, the museum helps visitors understand how Japan maintained independence and equipped herself to evolve into a developed country. Matsushita Electric Co. provided the funding for the museum, which is located on the side of the sacred mountain, Ryozen, where more than 3,000 Meiji restoration-related persons are enshrined.

Both Hideyoshi and the tea master Sen-no-Rikyu admired this pottery, which is elegant, simple and strong, capturing the essence of wabi spirit. The Raku enthusiast will be pleased with the tea bowl collection on the first floor. Pottery utensils and other tools of the trade are displayed on the second floor. Chojiro (1515-1592) developed the unique pottery technique in the 16th century. Kichizaemon represents the 15th generation, 450 years of tradition.

Murin-an Garden

Set in the foothills of Higashiyama, the garden's water supply came from the adjacent brick aqueduct connecting Lake Biwa to Kyoto, leaving the city less dependent on the Kamo River. With assistance from Jihei Ogawa, the Meiji politician, statesman and general Aritomo Yamagata [1838-1922] landscaped the strolling garden incorporating Western design features. The two-floored building was the venue for plotting the Russo-Japanese War. Photographs associated with Ogawa are displayed on the ground level and for a small charge it is possible to have a cup of green tea as you take in the view.

Koryuji

Koryuji Temple is famous for its masterpiece, the Miroku Bosatsu, an enchanting seventh century pinewood statue of the Boddhisattva Maitreya, the future Buddha and bringer of salvation to mankind. This striking image is thought to have been a gift from the Korean court to Prince Shotoku Taishi, whom every school child knows as Japan's early promoter of the Buddhist faith.

Honen-in

This small, secluded Jodo temple named after its founder, Honen, escapes most of the crowds at the nearby Silver Temple and is an oasis of serenity tucked up in the forested eastern hills. As you enter through the thatched, wooden gate, a pair of lovely raked-stone gardens appear, whose designs are changed regularly by the monks. On the right is a small hall that is often used for an exhibition or as event space. If the rear of the temple is open, you can cross the bridge over the carp pond and carry on to see an exquisite statue of Kannon, the Bodhisattva of mercy. Admission is free.

Shisendo

Ishikawa Jozan, an Edo period scholar and poet with an interest in the Chinese classics, founded this temple as a mountain refuge in 1631 after falling from grace with the Tokugawa shogunate. Now a Zen temple of the Soto sect, the walls of Ishikawa's former study are lined with portraits of Chinese poets by the renowned Kano School of painters. The dry sand garden is rounded by azaleas, maples and camellias. The peaceful garden is also famed for its shishi-odoshi, a piece of bamboo that is filled with water and when full, clacks on its stone bowl to scare away wild animals.

Gio-ji Temple

The Tale of Heike tells us that two of Kiyomari Taira's [1118-1181] mistresses, both dancers of the Heian period, took refuge here and became nuns after their affairs with Kiyomori were broken off. The first lady, Gio, came with both her mother and sister. A short while later Hotoke Gozen joined them to live in the rather remote rustic cottage with its thatched roof. Students of classical Japanese literature visit the nunnery to see the statues of Gio's mother, Gio, her sister Ginyo, Hotoke Gozen, and the pivotal player, Kiyomori.
