Floor to ceiling windows, refined drinks, and a panoramic terrace make this cocktail bar one of the most elegant and pleasant in Lausanne. The bar is inside the Lausanne Palace & Spa, and exudes the same contemporary style. A comprehensive menu offers just about any drink one can think of, with dozens of champagnes, spirits, dessert wines, and aperitifs to choose from. Holding to Swiss tradition, the bar also offers nearly a dozen first-rate cigars to go along with cocktails. Hotel guests and locals come to LP’s for coffee and tea breaks, evening cocktails on the terrace with lake views, and live music sets during evenings five days a week.
The dozen characteristic arches under the 19th-century Grand Pont Bridge are great for taking a break from walking around Lausanne, and are also the home of Les Arches café and pub. During the day the café is full of people spilling in from the Place de l’Europe, and enjoying the outdoor seating on a sunny day. At night, the arches are lit in neon colors, and the bar turns into a kind of under-the bridge nightclub, serving drinks, cocktails, appetizers, and full dinners from a fixed menu. Les Arches is a unique urban bar in the center of one of Lausanne’s busiest squares.
Le Colony is an old-school colonial-style bar mixed with a hookah lounge. The bar, which is also popular for its Moroccan mint tea and first-rate cocktails, has a beautiful heated terrace lined with hookah stations and shisha tables where guests can enjoy centuries-old smoking traditions on just about any night of any season. The terrace is covered, the lounge has plenty of sultry appeal, and the shisha flavors are plentiful to the tune of hundreds. The bar is great for couples looking for an intimate drink, or for groups that want to relax in a lounge setting.
Bar Tabac is a comfortable neighborhood bar and cafe situated on a corner of the classy rue Beau-Sèjour. The place is absolutely perfect for reading and working, with an aesthetic that mixes the best features of a light-filled library and a social living room. Bright curtains, nicely-chosen art, large windows, and worn wooden tables create a homey feel. During the evenings the place comes alive, with workers and students from the neighborhood and beyond drinking beer, wine, and coffee. It’s a bit of a surprise that the menu offers dozens of beers and local wines, and, while the food options are limited, they include tasty plates with sandwiches, cheeses, and French sausages. The old fashioned lemonade is quite popular.
This down-to-earth English-style pub is filled to the brim during soccer and rugby match days, and has become massively popular with Anglophiles and British expats. The place is well-stocked with beers on tap, and graced with a large garden and outdoor seating area that recalls a beer garden. The menu is full of items that pair well with a swig of decent beer, but is dominated by burgers. First-timers often return for the house burger specialties, which are cleverly named: The Rolls Royce, Chicken Butterfly Miso, and King Henry IV are ruled by the Great Beefburger.
There’s no need to make a trip to Munich or Belgium for a decent beer in Lausanne, because PiBar has at least seven brews on tap and more than 150 in bottles. Locals, in fact, say that PiBar has more kinds of beer than any other bar in the city, and the collection includes many beers from Swiss, Belgian, Danish, and American microbreweries. Cheese, pizza, burgers, and a few simple tapas dishes pair well with the beer cornucopia. By many measures, PiBar is one of the best places to have a beer in French-speaking Switzerland.
