The city of Kilkenny is home to beautiful parks, gardens and promenades. The Canal Walk is one such promenade that is ideal for long walks after a busy day of sightseeing. The promenade begins at Canal Square, and runs along a wall underneath the Kilkenny Castle. It then further runs along the River Nore for miles, and ends at the country side. The walk offers beautiful views of River Nore and the country side of Kilkenny. A peaceful and romantic stroll at the Canal Walk is recommended during early mornings and evenings.
With its babbling fountains, manicured lawns and landscaped gardens, the Kilkenny Castle Park is a charming retreat from the chores of daily life. Sprawled before the magnificent Kilkenny Castle, the park is open throughout the year and is a favorite amongst young and old alike. The scenic park is often used as a venue for open-air concerts, festivals, fairs and other events, one of the most popular of which is the annual Conker Championship.
The Newpark Fen in Kilkenny is spread across an area of 24 acres (9.7 hectares). This bird sanctuary is home to different species of migratory birds, more than 60 species of plants, trees and shrubs, mammals and insect species. The park is a delight for people of all ages, especially children, who enjoy the glimpse of rare plants and animals from close quarters and at the same time, enjoy feeding the farm animals along with the farmers. The park has a bird feeding area, boards with wildlife information and a wheelchair accessible walkway. Every year the park remains closed from the last week of November until spring.
