Il magnifico Palazzo della Borsa (Palácio da Bolsa) è uno splendido trionfo del design neoclassico con influenze palladiane, i cui interni riccamente decorati sono a livello delle grandiose aspirazioni dei mercanti di Porto. Alla fine della guerra civile portoghese, il sito dell'antico monastero di San Francisco fu concesso ai mercanti di Porto per la costruzione di un grande palazzo che sarebbe servito come sede dell'Associazione Commerciale. L'architetto Joaquim da Costa Lima Júnior fu incaricato del compito e la costruzione iniziò nel 1842. Mentre gran parte della facciata neoclassica fu completata entro il 1850, la sontuosa decorazione interna avrebbe richiesto altri sei decenni per essere realizzata: ciò fu la somma della visione di non uno, ma di diversi maestri dell’arte. La più grandiosa tra le numerose sale ornate del Palácio da Bolsa è la Sala Araba (Salão Árabe), un'elaborata camera ricca di stucchi e decorazioni dorate di influenza moresca. La Sala delle Nazioni (Pátio das Nações) non è da meno, con la sua sfavillante cupola ottagonale e gli stemmi colorati degli alleati commerciali del Portogallo del XIX secolo. This historic building from the 18th Century was, for decades, the home of the Brotherhood of Saint Francis. Noted for its neoclassical design and sumptuous Baroque interiors, the Dispatch House of the Third Order of Saint Francis, or the Casa de Despachos, now houses a museum of sacred art. Works by painters such as Vieira Portuense and Roquemont are on display in the Treasure Room, alongside intriguing artifacts of the religious order, as well as jewelry and other sacred ornaments. Flanked by the Gothic Church of São Francisco, this historic building turned museum paints a picture of the austere lifestyle of the monks in contrast to the ostentatious display of wealth by patrons of the Order. The museum also encompasses the Monument Church of Saint Francis itself, its stupendous cache of gilded Baroque carvings, and the mysterious catacombs beneath.

Constructed in 1877 and named after Dom Luis I's queen consort, the Maria Pia Bridge was the longest, single-arch span in the world at the time of its completion. Fashioned from wrought iron, the railway bridge was designed by none other than Gustavo Eiffel, best known as the architect of the Eiffel Tower in Paris. The double-hinged, crescent arch of the Maria Pia Bridge spans the Douro River at a height of 60 meters (200 feet); a revolutionary design that was able to overcome challenges, like frequent flooding, that had forestalled the construction of a more traditional bridge with piers. After years of steady use, the bridge was replaced in 1991 by the São João when it could no longer keep pace with the increase in rail traffic along this route. Even so, the iconic structure still stands, its iron arch a National Monument and an indispensable part of Porto's scenery.
