Since its inception in 1961, Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) has been devoted to collecting works of art that span both history and geography. Today, the museum features particularly strong collections of Asian, Latin American, European, and American art, as well as a contemporary museum on its campus, Broad Contemporary Art Museum (BCAM). With this expanded space for contemporary art, innovative collaborations with artists, and an ongoing transformation project, LACMA is creating a truly modern lens through which to view its rich encyclopedic collection of more than 100,000 works. With this much to explore, it is ideal to spend an entire day at the museum.
The Huntington, the former home of a railroad tycoon, is many things—an extensive library filled with rare books, a large art collection containing numerous European prints and paintings, botanical gardens of almost unmatched splendor and a forum for regular lectures and other activities. You will also find a fine bookstore, cafe and tea room on the grounds. Come and wander through the 150 acres of colorful gardens, lily ponds and beautiful sculptures. The rare books and manuscripts in the library include some of the earliest editions of Shakespeare's works, a copy of the Gutenberg Bible on vellum and the Ellesmere manuscript of one or more of Chaucer's greatest works. Please note reservations are required in order to visit and prices vary depending on the day of the week.
Located on the UCLA campus in Westwood, The Hammer, as it is commonly called, originally opened in 1990 with an extensive collection of fine art featuring painters such as Monet and Rembrandt. In 2007, the Hammer condensed its collection to its very best pieces and recreated itself to feature the most 'cutting-edge' of contemporary art. Now the museum is filled not just with classic paintings but features poetry readings, political debates, celebrity events and late-night DJ parties that are free to students and young artists. The Hammer Project brings up-and-coming artists to center stage featuring them in solo exhibitions, which supports the Hammer's new image as a leader in contemporary art. Group tours can be arranged by calling or emailing in advance.
