Children's Museum of the Lowcountry

Open since 2003 in what was once part of Charleston's 19th Century railroad station complex, The Children's Museum of the Lowcountry now serves as a magnet to curious children aged 3 months to 12 years (and the adults who accompany them) to "explore, play, discover, learn and create." With eight interactive exhibits, the museum's aim is to develop a child's thinking, motor and problem solving skills. There is also a special area for infants and toddlers. Children's classes include science, nature, cooking, gardening, history, drama and art. There's even story time, camps and field trips. It's great fun for the whole family.

The Charleston Museum

A rich repository of artifacts spanning the disciplines of history, archaeology, and decorative arts, Charleston is touted to be one of the oldest museums in the country. Founded in 1773, it is America's first public museum. Focusing extensively on local, cultural and natural history, the museum houses permanent exhibits chronicling the course of 18th and 19th-century America. Along with housing antiquated mementos from the Civil War, they also feature an impressive silver collection which includes the christening cup of George Washington. Sheltering the only remaining fossil of the now extinct bird 'pelagornis sandersi', the museum also harbors plenty of other intriguing artifacts like olden photographs, documents, ceramics, and treasured furniture of Charleston. The museum also preserves two nearby historic homes, namely the Joseph Manigault House and the Heyward-Washington House.

King Street

King Street is Charleston's main shopping thoroughfare. Starting at the southern tip of Charleston and running north, you have 16 blocks of shops to explore as you admire the beautifully preserved colonial architecture. You can find everything from Gap to Gucci, but the many independent stores are what make King Street unique. The area is in three sections: the design and dining district, the fashion district, and the antiques district. For rare and pricey home furnishings, try hunting in A. Fairfax Antiques. And for the shoe lovers, Bob Ellis Shoes stocks high-end designers like Manolo Blahnik and Prada, but you may want to opt for comfortable walking shoes if you're attempting to shop the whole length of King Street!

Dock Street Theatre

Charleston is steeped in history and culture, and the Dock Street Theatre is proof of this. Established in 1736, it is one of the first public theaters in the country. It is an example of Antebellum architecture replete with wrought-iron railings and splendid archways. The building was renovated in the 1930s to restore its 18th-century charm, which attracts throngs of photo-taking architecture enthusiasts. Now host to the Charleston Stage Company, this renowned professional group organizes an eclectic schedule of cultural events, concerts, productions and performing arts through the year, which are a big draw among locals and tourists alike.

Old Exchange and Provost Dungeon

The history of the Old Exchange Building is a complicated one. The Declaration of Independence was read from its balcony, and it was used by Washington to greet his people. However, it was also a notorious prison during the Revolution, and a major site in the slave trade. Today you can come see the site for yourself, explore its history, and make your own decisions as to its legacy. What can't be debated is its beautiful architecture, which makes it a true Charleston landmark.

Charles Towne Landing State Historic Site

Charles Towne Landing is the site of the first South Carolina permanent English settlement. With a history dating back to 1670, the 80 acres of this park have become a living museum, featuring historical attractions, educational activities and plenty of outdoor spaces to explore. There's a visitor center that introduces kids and adults to life in colonial times. Experience hands-on activities and go on a self-guided tour of the area. Visit the Animal Forest to see species that the settlers encountered, like bears and pumas. Special events are frequent, including live cannon firings and musket demonstrations. Bring a lunch or purchase food from one of the vendors onsite.

Boone Hall Plantation

Charleston's lowcountry is teeming with picturesque plantations; the Boone Hall Plantation is one of them. Nestled in the quaint town of Mount Pleasant, this verdant expanse has been featured in popular Hollywood movies such as The Notebook. One of the country’s oldest plantations, Boone Hall is also a haven for history buffs. Nearly hundreds of slaves worked on the grounds of the plantation and lived in small cabins. Visitors can tour the cabins to learn more about the life and times of Black Americans. Apart from the rich history, the plantations are home to the stunning Avenue of Oaks and a historic mansion.

Magnolia Plantation & Gardens

Founded in 1676, the Magnolia Plantation & Gardens is one of South Carolina's most renowned green spaces built over 390 acres (160 hectares) of pristine pastures. Walking along a numbered path, you will find many beautiful cypresses and live oak trees that blissfully stand along the Ashley River's serene eastern banks. Showcasing a multitude of landscaping styles, these beautiful gardens are most-notably embellished by the horticulture mazes of Flowerdale that consists of over 50 acres (20.4 hectares) of serene flowerbeds, Camellia plantations and boxwood paddocks. The Plantation House, the Nature Train, the Nature Boat, and Audubon Swamp Garden are some of the park's major attractions that also host various fun activities and events from time to time. For those who ride bicycles, the green-scape is dotted with a succession of trails that wind through the woods.
