The beauty of Texas' nature can be experienced first-hand with a hike through this 630-acre (146-hectare) preserve. With guided and self-guided tours available along the ten miles of wooded trails, outdoor enthusiasts can wander up to the Escarpment Nature Preserve, the highest point in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. Along the way you can view ponds, wildflowers and a butterfly garden before arriving at vistas and an observation tower. The trails vary in difficulty. All are natural terrain paved with rock, mulch, or dirt. They are designed for foot traffic only, and bikes or roller blades are not allowed. Hikes can last anywhere from 15 minutes to three hours, depending upon the trail selected. A snack bar, gift shop, and amphitheater are also located on the grounds.

Spread over a whopping 800 acres (323 hectares) of lush greenery, the Oak Point Park and Nature Preserve is the largest park in all of Plano. Families and groups take full advantage of the soft surface trail and concrete trails that run along the Rowlett Creek, offering panoramic views of some spectacular flora and fauna. There is also an amphitheater which plays host to live gigs, cultural and community events.

Situated on Martin Luther King Junior Boulevard in Dallas, the Texas Discovery Gardens are a must-see for any visitor to Dallas. This place is one of the only gardens to be certified as 100% organic by the Organic Research Center of Texas. The garden is surrounded by greenery and numerous specimens of native plants. Visitors can drop by one of the ten themed areas which include a native wildlife pond, a scent garden, a butterfly habitat, an heirloom garden, and a shade garden.

With a variety of apartment complexes and shopping centers around the park it's very surprising to find such a serene area as Cottonwood. The small lake that runs through it provides many different activities. The playgrounds and cook-out areas offer a great outing for families and friends. Because of how nice Cottonwood is, it's host to many different festivals throughout the year. Just beware of the Texas heat in the summer and be prepared!

Numerous trails begin at the Trinity River Audubon Center, leading you deeper into the forest for a closer look at the wonders that await within. While you are free to explore the trails on your own, guided tours are offered as well. Numerous fun-filled activities and events are often organized at the center.
