Serendipitously located along the route between Phoenix and the Grand Canyon, MartAnne's is always filled with tourists who make it inside as well as a steady influx of locals. The restaurant is only open for breakfast and lunch, but during these times the plates remain consistently massive. Actually, one dish is nearly enough for two hungry people. Some of the recommended dishes include the chilaquiles, fried tortilla chips in cheese, sauce, and topped with a fried egg or the posole (corn soup) with hashbrowns.
When describing Tinderbox Kitchen, organic, local and sustainable are words often used. In fact, the tasting menus just use the ingredient itself as the centerpiece. For example, the charcuterie board may have different cheeses, but the accompaniments like the apples, crostini, simple greens and dressing could all stand strong by themselves. Entrees include scallops, steaks, duck and venison as well as what is in season. Each plate is prepared with the utmost care and if you can't make a choice on how to combine the myriad options, let the chef figure it all out.
The Tourist Home Urban Market is located in what was an old Basque sheepherder's house and like many buildings along this street, it has been refurbished beautifully. Inside, visitors will not only find a bustling restaurant, but a specialty, organic market as well. Stop in early for a breakfast burrito or come in late for the Quiche of the Day, whatever time you choose, everything is always made fresh as you order. On your way out, pick up some cheese, pastries or wine to take home.
Swadee Thai is the other Thai restaurant downtown (the other is Dara Thai) and some consider it to be the best. Whatever your preference is, both restaurants serve classic dishes from this Southeast Asian country. On the menu, dishes like Pad Thai, Lard Nar and Tom Kha Soup are all outstanding while the Thai Iced Tea is a refreshing treat any time of the year in this mountain town. Curries, rice and noodle dishes round out the rest of the menu. Additionally, don't forget to try the Sweet Sticky Rice with Thai Custard, it's one of the best desserts on Aspen Avenue.
In a town filled with college students, Primo's Deli fills their stomachs for cheap and it stays open until late. On the menu, the no-frills joint serves sloppy hot dogs in every form imaginable, from the classic Chicago Dog to Vegan Dogs. Since it is open until 3AM, if you come after the bars closed, be prepared to wait as it tends to get packed.
Since 1985 vegans, vegetarians and practically anyone else who enjoys delicious, healthy food has eaten here while traversing this mountain town. The menu is purely vegetarian, with items like Tempeh, Tofu and homemade Hempburgers, so if you are looking for protein of the red meat variety, you might want to search elsewhere. Otherwise the Corn Tamal served with a side of pinto beans or the Pesto Tofu Sandwich are superb alternatives to he greasy burger and fries. Morning Glory is only open for breakfast and lunch, so get here early to start your day off right.
