Just south of Chattanooga is the site of the area's longest and bloodiest battle of the United States Civil War. The U.S. War Department (now the Department of the Interior) declared this battlefield a National Military Park in the 1890s. It has attracted millions of visitors over the years. Chickamauga Battlefield, Lookout Mountain Battlefield and Point Park, Missionary Ridge and Moccasin Bend are the highlights of this attraction. A visitor's center provides detailed information about the history of the battlefield and the battles fought here. Clarence T. Jones Observatory is managed by the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. It was opened in 1938, and the observatory allows free entry and conducts special tours and programs for the general public.

Built in 1847, Gordon-Lee Mansion is a fantastic Museum that houses several interesting items of the 1800's – 1900's era. Once you're at this place, there is a printed guide that provides all the needed information about the Mansion and its rooms. The rooms upstairs consists of several artifacts and souvenirs that are from the time of the restoration period. The tour and facts provided mainly talks about the use of the house during the Civil war. The furniture, furnishing and other exhibits are simply interesting and worth the visit.

Located between downtown Chattanooga and the Tennessee River, The Passage is a splendid historic landmark in the city that marks the beginning of the Trail of Tears. The trail denotes the melancholy of the Cherokee tribes who were forced to migrate from the Ross's Landing in Chattanooga to Oklahoma. Passersby can take a glimpse of various forms of the Cherokee history by viewing artifacts like the Weeping Wall, that symbolizes the tears shed as the Cherokee were driven from their homes, steel sculptures of stick ball players and other wall paintings that gives one a brief knowledge about the the Cherokee culture.
