This castle is located about 23km (14 miles) east of Galway city. After the Norman conquest in 1234, Richard de Burgo granted a charter to Meiler de Bermingham, his comrade in arms. De Bermingham built his castle by the ford on the River Clareen with this charter. The medieval town of Athenry then sprung up around the castle. The castle itself consists of a three-storey tower surrounded by the remains of a fortified outer wall. Guided tours are available and include audio/visual presentations.

This Franciscan Friary, colloquially known as "The Abbey", was originally founded in 1296 on St. Stephen's Island. In 1438, Pope Eugenius IV was so impressed with the Friary that he decreed a school for advanced theological study to be established at the Friary in Galway. The old church became a courthouse in the 1600's and in 1820 the present friary was built, although it was not consecrated until 1849. The "Abbey" was extensively refurbished in 1997-98 and today five Friars serve the community as well as providing church services. The Friars also act as Chaplains to the local schools.

The Historic Dartfield Horse Museum and Heritage Centre is a must see for horse and dog lovers. The museum was initially intended to pay tribute to Irish horses but now has expanded to give you a peek into the rustic past of rural Ireland as well! This is not just a museum, the 350 acres of parkland also lets you have coach parties, horse rides or simply relax at the cafe or saddlery shop.

Established in 2000, Áras Éanna is a multipurpose center comprising a theater, couple of art galleries and a cafe. Housed within what was formerly a weaving factory, the center is a hub for local artists who display their creativity through various art exhibitions throughout the year. Theatrical performances, stand up comedy shows, plays and dramas also take place here regularly. Music lovers are treated to live music concerts by Irish artists and bands. The Inisheer Film Festival takes place at this center annually. Artists and Bands like Rofi James, Farriers Band and Seán Tyrell have graced this venue in the past.

St. Brendan's glorious interior is barely hinted at from the outside. Some of the greatest treasures of the Celtic revival are on display within the building. The exceptional carvings and stained glass windows must be seen, especially the many windows exemplifying the life of Saint Brendan. The marble statue of the Virgin and Child demonstrates impressive craftsmanship. Adjacent to the church is the diocesan museum, where church artifacts and vestments are displayed.

Stronach Gallery which was the brainchild of Nicola Stronach and Jean-Pierre, offers art for sale online but also has an interesting collection in their Victorian country house in Galway, where one can visit with a prior appointment. This gallery is unique, in the sense that it hosts not just Irish art but paintings from all over the world. The gallery also represents artists from the ex-Soviet Union.
