A secluded hiking trail runs along the length of Purgatory Brook and leads past the three Purgatory Falls - the Upper, Middle and Lower Falls, The region was once a popular tourist destination, rife with hotels, entertainment venues and the like, and the falls soon became a popular attraction. Although no longer particularly well-known, the falls retain a certain mysterious allure and wild charm that appeals to many. The Upper Falls are the main attraction along this trail where, legend has it, the Devil once hosted a bean party that went disastrously wrong. As Satan called upon the fires of hell to heat his pot of beans, the rocks melted beneath him rendering him stuck. The only evidence of this legendary event are two markings in the rocks that surround the falls. The first is a hole that is believed to be the Devil's pot and the second an indent marking the spot where he stood. The Upper Falls are just a short walk away from the trail head and a fine place to visit even if you're not up to hiking the entire length of the trail.
